Mandatory licensing of rented property being extended
Mon 09 Nov 2015
The mandatroy HMO licensing scheme is to be extended to cover two bedroom homes and bungalows. From next year all HMO's with 5 or more people will have to licensed. In addition there will be a minimum bedroom size of 6.5 square metres.
The current mandatory licensing regime only applies to shared homes of three or more storeys occupied by five or more people, who do not form a single household. This is set to change next year under the new proposals which are currently out for consultation.
At the same time a number of local councils are considering introducing blanket licensing of all types of rented property, including property not classed as an HMO.
