Delay on Right to Rent by the Government
Fri 19 Jun 2015
The implementation of the new Right to Rent Scheme, where landlords and letting agents will have to check the immigration status of tenants has been postponed. David Cameron originally said that the scheme would be rolled out nationally before the results of the pilot, but now one of his ministers has said otherwise. Instead the results will be evaluated before any decision is made on whether to roll out the scheme to the rest of the country.
Under the proposals, landlords will be required to verify the immigration status of a tenant applying to rent their property. The landlord can delegate this responsibility to their letting agent, for example if they are managing the property for them. It a tenant sublets to another tenant it is the tenant's responsibility to carry out this check.
